From Wired:

Developed by a company called Creatables, Strawbees is a new open-ended construction kit based on a series of small, low-cost, plastic connectors that turn readily available materials, like drinking straws and cardboard boxes, into giant cranes and geodesic forts. Meant to appeal to a range of ages and abilities, Strawbees challenges kids to think at an architectural scale and is future-friendly: LEDs fit perfectly into most straws, allowing kids to making glowing structures and the Creatables team is seeding Strawbees in hackerspaces where they are being mashed up with Arduinos and Raspberry Pi boards. Strawbees also changes the construction kit paradigm by selling kids the means of production instead of a steady stream of parts.
